15 year old granddaughter has had acne since 12 and now has baseball sized hematomas on her inner thighs. She lives in Panama now and has been in the hospital three times, but after antibiotics settle it (usually 1 at a time), another one will form. She is 1/2 Hispanic, 1/2 American. Her periods started at age 10, and she only gets about three a year. She is a little overweight (maybe 20 lbs), so this rubbing on her thighs is painful.

Optional Information:

Your grand-daughter may have an especially severe for of acne known as hiradenitis suppurativa, in which large painful acne-like abscesses form on the face, groin, and armpits. This condition is very difficult to treat, and usually these patients require antibiotics and surgical drainage of some of the lesions.

The following website has some good information for the two of you to read before heading back to the doctor:

Thanks and good luck!
