Had biopsy that reads slight portal tract inflammation, slight fatty change and
minimal fibrosis (grade 0 1 4+) and a moderate amount of hepatocellular iron
is present. first how bad is this liver damaged. what does the iron mean.
2 nd after the biopsy i took meds clonipine and trazadone for 3 months daily.
I have all the symptoms of cirrhosis now. Im wondering if i could of gone to
cirrhosis from the initial biopsy that fast. Went back to the doctor and did
liver function test and cat scan which were normal, said im all set, my liver is fine.
I have read that you can have cirrhosis and have normal lft and a normal cat scan.
is this true. again my doctor will not do any more test although i explain all the symptoms to him. my symtoms include weight loss, loss of appt., bloating,
red acne like dots on my chest and back., fever, putting i think its called when my
body get indent marks all over it.

Do not accept a dismissal from a Doctor when your perceptions disagree.

The biopsy results reflect mild liver damage, which with apporopriate interventions (diet, exercise, avoid ETOH and narcotics) can be reversed.

Cirrhosis is chronic and would not develop over a short period.

Acute infection or inflammation of the liver causes symptoms as well.

For example-I had a patient with gall bladder disease which regurgitated into her liver causing fever, pain, edema, and severe nausea. It resolved after the gall bladder was removed.

In cirrhosis of the liver, scar tissue replaces normal, healthy tissue, blocking the flow of blood through the organ and preventing it from working as it should. The biopsy is the definative diagnosing factor so it is time to investigate other causes of these symptoms.

The high iron in the liver can be suggestive of hemochromatosis or other iron overload syndromes. A genetic test for this disease, as well as a blood ferritin level can be considered.

If your doctor continues to refuse to investigate, get a new opinion. You should keep a log of symptoms, onset, duration, precipitating and resolving factors.

I hope this helped, please accept if it did. Good luck.

Reply to Christy Hammond's Post: Thanks i understand the biopsy shows mild damage.
First im concerned that taken clonipine and
trazadone for 3 months after the biopsy took me
to cirrhosis. Also i was only off alchohol for
6 months before the biopsy. Is that long enough
to show the exact damage. When i was on the meds
my billirubin was high. the rest of my liver
function test were normal. Also my eyes seemed
to get glossy and yellow as i took the pills.
I read if you damage you liver from pills your
billirubin will be high and eyes may turn yellow.
my doctor though nothing of it because my ast and
alt were normal. he said if i damaged my liver
those would of been high as i took the pills.
Also after i stopped the pills my bullirubin
came back to normal. Also my weight had been the
same for 10 months as i see the doctor. But i have lost all sorts of weight. My pants went down
5 inches. I try to explain to the doctor thats
because i must be retaining water. He thinks im
nuts. I know my body. What would you recommend,do
you think this is a end stage liver problem.
also is caffine bad for a damaged liver. i do
drink alot of soda, i try to drink caffine free
soda like sprite. Any ideas will help as the
doctors have me confused. Wish i never got
prescriptions for the meds. But at the time
i needed them to calm me down. Since my doctors
thought i had no big problems they thought the meds could not hurt.

Trazadone and to a lesser extent Klonapin effect the liver. Most drugs due because it is the liver's job to process drugs and alcohol. The Trazadone may have been the reason your enzymes were moderately elevated. This will reverse itself when the trazadone becomes unecessary. For now-abstaining from alcohol is number one.

The liver biopsy is the definative test. You do not have cirrohsis if the biopsy does not show it. You can develop cirrohsis and certainly your liver shows strain from drinking-I would not tempt fate.

Following a bout of liver inflammation from any source you may find your body is conditioned to respond to certain drugs, and even food with liver like symptoms.

Arrange your diet around foods you tolerate, maintain low sodium and moderate protein. The yellow eyes may have other origins including smoking.

Prepare for your next Dr appt with all of your questions, a journal of symptoms and be prepared to demand answers.

Caffeine effects fluid balance, blood pressure and moods so avoid it along with processed or fatty foods.

I hope this helps-please accept if it does.

I will keep you in my prayers, best wishes.

Reply to Christy Hammond's Post: Thanks again. Could of i gone from mild damage
to cirrhosis by taken the pills. My lft tests
are normal as is a cat scan. I know this case is
somewhat unusual. I get a biopsy shows ill be ok
then i take meds for 3 months and think my liver
is now cirrhosis. Have not drank in a year by
the way. What test should i ask for. i know
the biopsy is the only true test. Is it to
early for a biosy to show the true results
of damage form drinking and pills. Do you think
the pills could of made my liver that much worse.
As you can tell iam desperate for answers that no
doctor will give me. most of the doctors i see
usually make up some excuse for my symptoms and
say to get cirrhosis would of taken alot longer
than taken pills for 3 months. I try to explain that i already had a liver problem but they just
wont listen .

I am also in recovery and know the pain of waiting for the other shoe to drop. I worry about the long term damage they will discover I've done, and what I'll be facing.

Keep having the tests your doctor recommends and try to use diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle to improve overall well being.

Keep an open mind and do not assume the reasons your doctor gives are excuses.

Your body will recover, and you must be open to feeling good. We addicts have trouble accepting good news but here is some for you: You have not done permenant liver damage and you have a chance at total mental and physical health.

Best of luck to you.
