It could be a sign of incontinence, which can be from an overactive bladder. Don't be ashamed it is the same as any other health issue and can happen to anyone. If it continues there are things you can do and medications to help like Detrol LA

If I were you and it does happen again or continually get worse I would make an appointment wiht my physician so he can best provide solutions for you on this matter but please don't be ashamed it can happen to anyone.
There are also further testing that can be done to see if this could have been caused by something else other than overactive bladder, I would discuss it with my physician and he can best prescribe what will help you the most and be able to do tests to determine the cause.

I can think of several reasons for adult bed wetting.

First, I agree with Cheryl that there may an underlying bladder problem that may need to be diagnosed by your phsician or a urologist. If the bed wetting were due to an overactive bladder, I would think you would have frequent urges to urinate during the day as well. You might want to limit your fluid intake after 6 pm to see if that helps.

Second, some people simply do not wake up and go to the bathroom when they need to urinate. Sometimes alcohol or sleeping pills or any sedative use at night can cause this. Sometimes some medications can contribute to bed wetting as well.

Third, I have seen adult bed wetting as a symptom of untreated issues such as sexual abuse as a child, or a history of rape. This can occur in both men and women.

I also agree that shame is maybe not the way to look at this situation. You have a medical condition that needs treatment regardless of the cause. It is not your fault that this occurs BUT you are being given symtoms that show you something is wrong. If you try to think of the bed wetting as a way your body is trying to tell you something is wrong instead of being ashamed of something you cannot help, maybe it will prompt you to follow up and look for other help.

Did you have bed wetting problems as a child?
