My girlfriend and I have been dating for 4 months and during most of that time we were doing some pretty heavy partying (drinking) on the weekends (stopped a week ago). She has found out that she is pregnant and has stopped drinking. I want to know the risk factors that we are dealing with due to the heavy drinking before we knew she was pregnant. She had a positive pregnancy test 7 weeks after her last normal period and stopped drinking then.

dalponte,

A lot of women drink or take medication before finding out they are pregnant and all turns out fine. She should inform her doctor about this though, as her doctor might want to do some extra testing just to be sure no harm was done.

Reply to Annie's Post: Her ob/gyn hasn't set her first doctor visit until July 12 when she will be 13 weeks pregnant. Would that be too early or too late to tell if there is a problem?

dalponte,

If this appt is for an ultrasound, then it is the correct time to have an exam done. She does need to mention this to her doctor though so future exams can be more detailed, just to be safe and to notice any complications. As another expert pointed out here, the chances of fetal alcohol syndrome but this would be valid only if she was continuing to drink- not for a few times right before she was informed that she was pregnant.
