Question

It's been over 115 days since I've been alcohol,

Sent to Health Experts July 27, 2006 10:19 a.m.

It's been over 115 days since I've been alcohol, adderall and nicotine free. Since I've withdrawn I have had painful all over edema. I've gone through physicals to check for damage at the medical center in Houston and no one can find a cause for the edema. Is this a Post withdrawal symptom and what could be causing it?

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy)-

Congratulations on getting off the alcohol, tobacco and Adderall! This is quite impressive and very difficult to do!

It sounds like you've really tried many of the standard treatments for edema - and it's good that you've been checked by doctors.

One by one:

Alcohol: Typically people associate alcohol intake with an increased likelihood of suffering from edema. As such, it is not too likely that your removing alcohol from your diet is a cause.

Adderall: One side effect of Adderall is dehydration, which causes people on Adderall to drink more water to quench their thirst. It is possible that since you stopped taking the Adderall, you have not been drinking as much water as you used to (since you no longer have the trigger to drink water). Since a major cause of edema is an inbalance between water and sodium in the body, it is possible your stopping the Adderall has indirectly caused your edema.

Tobacco: Edema is very unlikely to be caused by eliminating tobacco for the same reason alcohol is unlikey to be a factor. Typically edema is more common in tobacco users than non users.

What you can do: Try to eliminate or reduce your sodium intake, and drink the daily recommended amount of water. Also, continue to keep your lower extremities elevated. Continue seeking out second opinions as well - edema can be a very serious condition if left untreated.
