If you have AFib (it is serious) then you are at high risk of creating blood clots...if one of those clots goes to your leg then you can lose blood supply there so that would be a concern, but being that it has been there for so long this is unlikely (however, make sure you are taking a blood thinner of some sort, usually coumadin and/or aspirin-- ask your doctor).
More likely is that you are getting a peripheral neuropathy...risk factors for peripheral neuropathy include diabetes (most common cause), alcohol abuse, vitamin deficiency (esp. b-1 and b-12), autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, liver disease, kidney disease, certain cancers and aids, heavy metal poisonings, certain medications (usually those for aids or cancer), and repetitive use syndromes (like carpal tunnel if your problem was in your hand). A final cause would be direct pressure on a nerve (from an injury or a growth).
So there could be many causes...the key is to get the important ones ruled out--- if that symptom is constant then you really deserve to find out the cause. If you are diabetic, then that is probably it.
Treatment is aimed at the underlying cause (i.e. control your blood sugar, or if it is b-12 deficiency, replace it).
Good Luck!
