Sleeping problem

I always have this sleeping problem. And I have seen many doctors and found no cure.

When I sleep, I feel that my blood pours into my brain. I can only sleep for a few hours, sometimes no sleep at all. The second morning, I often feel headache. I think the blood was pressing my nerves. I believe something is wrong with my brain.

If I stay in bed too long(awake or asleep), 80% of chances will get me a headache. I am a computer engineer. I use my brain a lot.

When I use Midrin medince, which narrows the blood vessels in the brains, the headache will be gone. I think there could be a big problem with my brain.

Can somebody tells what's going on?

Hi,
By what you are describing it seems that you are having chronic tension headaches. Tension headaches result from the contraction of neck and scalp muscles. One cause of this muscle contraction is a response to stress, depression or anxiety. Any activity that causes the head to be held in one position for a long time without moving can cause a headache e.g. typing or use of computers, fine work with the hands, and use of a microscope. Sleeping in a cold room or sleeping with the neck in an abnormal position can also trigger this headache.

Other causes include eye strain, fatigue, alcohol use, excessive smoking, excessive caffeine use, sinus infection, nasal congestion, overexertion, colds, and influenza.
Midrin is the medicine given in tension headaches and migraine headaches. That is why you respond to it so well.
Traetment of tension headaches is not only controlling the acute episodes but also preventing them. The treatment is done by a combination of pain killers and sedatives if required. To prevent headaches you need to change your lifestyle.
  • Try to relax before going to sleep - like listening to music or reading something light.
  • Exercise daily
  • avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking
  • try not to work at a stretch for long hours. Take breaks in between for 5 minutes or so.

I would advise you to try changing your daily routine, relax and take painkillers whenever you get a headache. If still there is no improvement then you need to consult your doctor and ask him to treat your tension headaches.

Reply to Gaurav Gupta's Post: Hi, Dr, Gupta,

Thanks for the answer. How do you think my blood goes into the brain and stays in the brain.

A lot of times, I wake up in the morning and feel headache. But after I stand up for about 10 minutes, the pain will become less and sometimes gone.

My headache happens most often during weekends because usually I sleep more time then. So, that is why I think my blood is pressing the nerves.

Recently, the sleeplessness and headache become much worse. I only can sleep for about 3 to 4 hours a night. Sometimes even fear to go to bed because I am afraid to get a headache.

Can you recommend any medicine?

Hi,
It is well known that certain forms of stree/insomnia related headaches may worsen early in the morning due to lack of proper sleep. I believe that this is the most likely explanation for your early morning headache. Als the theory of increased blood flow causing heacdaches has been largely discredited now. It is justa feeling that you have rather than the actually increased blood flow. Instead of just looking at a pill as an answer you need a detailed diagnostic workeup for possible causes of headache, insomnia, stress and even mild dyskiemia (depression). I would encourage you to seek the help of a physian or psychologist so that proper therapy can be initiated in your case.
