Question

Sent to Health Experts December 13, 2006 10:38 p.m.

I have fluid in my abdomen, have had high liver counts and unusual periods of difficulty breathing. The more full the abdomen is the harder time I have breathing. Physicians want to treat the breathing as if it's asthma and completely seperate from my abdomen, but I can tell you that my gut and the fluid that appears like a bowl full of jelly around my belly are directly connected. I weigh 105 pds, I am 49 years old. One more thing, when I have a bra around the rib area it makes my breathing even more difficult and painful. Doctor gave me zelnorm and sent me to the asthma specialist. They treat it as seperate problems and nothing has worked. Suggestions for a facility that treats that the body as a whole ? Any thoughts of the problem?

Let me ask you:

What is the problem you have with your liver?
Is it viral Hepatitis, or alcohol related?
What are they doing to treat your liver?
Have you ever had the fluid on your belly removed?
Do you have any lung or heart problems? Congestive heart failure?
What specialist have you seen?

I do believe that must of your problems are related to you liver. The fluid on your abdoman can make it very difficult to breath.

Let me know

Dan

Hi Dan,
My Liver counts have been high with intermintent periods of being normal. I do not drink, but I have int he past drank dark beer or red wine, average in the past 0-6 drinks in a month. They have tested and retested for hepatitis, test return negative. No one has ever treated the liver. No one ever addresses the fluid in my abdomen, the response is usually, non responsive since I am small they don't feel it or see it like I do knowing my body. It was also incinuated that belly comes with age. They have done heart stress tests since I have periods of palpitations. Stress tests have come out fine. I have seen gastrologist, lung specialist, heart specialist, internalist?

Very commonly when you liver is not fuctioning propery it causes fluid to accumulate on the abdomen. I am pretty certain this is what is causing your shortness of breath. When you have this fluid on you abdomen and you are more of a abdominal breather it can become very heard to breath.

I would really like to know what is going on with your liver. Since they can't seem to find out why they should do a liver biopsy. This is look at your liver cells under a microscope and concusively tell you if you have hepatitis from a virus or alcohol or something else. It sounds most likely to me you have a viral hepatitis. A liver biopsy is the most conclusive test you can have to find out. I believe this is what all of your symptoms are from. It really could account for you shortness of breath and the fluid on your belly.

I would try to find a liver specialist. They are auctually liver specialist that go a bit further than a GI doctor. But there are not to many of them. If you can't find one I would try to get a second opinion from a GI doctor. Once they treat your liver problem I believe you will feel much better.

I would avoid tylenol and alcohol for now. Let me know if this is helpful. This is what I think you need to do. If you have another opinion let me know. We need to come up with a solution for you.

yes, I agree with you and have tried to find liver specialist in Orlando, but physicians are not listed under liver specialist. I have had so many gastrologist that have been such poor physicians in the looking at the body as a whole, two of the gasto's I saw actually felt there was no problem with not having a bowel movenment for a week to 10 days,,,they stated to me that just because I hadn't gone in three days and had extreme fluid around the belly was really normal and nothing to be concerned about. so what I am saying is I don't want to do the I will try them out and see any more. It only continues to bring me discouragement about our medical physicians in the U.s. so if you have any resources Dan that you may be able to assist me in finding a liver specialist in the Orlando or Tampa, florida area I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you for your time.
