Will stomach bleeding caused by ibuprofin go away?
Sent to Health Experts January 11 03:14 PM

After taking ibuprofin and drinking alcohol I noticed some blood in my stool. Will this go away within a short period of time assuming that I stop taking the ibuprofin and drinking?

Hello:

Through research on this topic, the general rule is:

*Contact your doctor if you experience bloody, black, or tarry stools or blood in the vomit.*

These symptoms could indicate damage to the gastrointestinal tract, and should be ruled out as soon as possible to prevent furter damage/risk.

If you drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day, ibuprofen may increase the risk of stomach bleeding.

If you drink alcohol & take pain medication frequent in nature, you are at higher risk of developing scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) and problems with your esophagus and stomach that can also cause sudden & severe bleeding.

In any event, the best advice is from a professional Physician to rule out any or all possible damage to your internal organs.

Reply to cherummy's Post: Well, I know all that now. That answer can be found on the side of the bottle. My question was, will this likely go away? Any home remedies that you suggest? Will Pepto Bismol help?

Hello again,

I am sorry if my response did not answer your concern.

Due to the possibility of damage that might have been caused to your gastrointestinal tract, a suggested home remedy might make the situation even worse.
Only specific testing could rule out any or all possible damage to your internal organs, and therefore treatment options should only be obtained after safety clearance by a Doctor.

Pepto- & Antacids will assist in soothing a upset tummy, etc,. However, it will not "stop" the bleeding from happening.

Your condition could be a very serious one, and time may be of the essense. If it doesn't stop on its own, or the amount of the blood output gets worse, I highly suggest you consider the option to seek emergency treatment immediately.

Feel free to write again if anything further is needed.

Take care..
