whenever I consume even small quantities of alchohol, red wine being the biggest culprit, I can't sleep. Is this an allergy?

Reply to haloprecious's Post: Yes, fluttering and/or a heaviness in my chest before bed when attempting to fall asleep. No nausea, no discomfort in abdomen.

Reply to haloprecious's Post: I am a 51 year old male who has mild hypertension and I am on medication for that. My father died of heart disease. I have not been feeling this way from the beginning. The symptoms have been escalating lately with moderate alcohol use. Sometimes it's when I have only had 1 glass of red wine.

Thanks for replying.

Considering the symptoms, it is less likely that the heaviness or fluttering of the heart is due to allergy in your case. The reason being- this symptom has developed of late where as in allergy usually one tends to have symptoms from the very beginning of starting on the allergy associated factor. Also only a single manifestation develops which can occur due to causes other than allergy. Thirdly the symptom precipitating with lesser amounts of alcohol.

Alcohol is known to weaken heart muscle and in those prone to heart disease like in a person with pre existing hypertension, heart muscle is doubly stressed.
I would strongly advise you to go for a heart checkup and related tests. All the more essential since you have a positive family history of heart disease.

This is definitely not common and in fact very contrary considering wine usually causes most people to sleep.
Maybe it creates a discomfort which causes you to remain awake, something which should be investigated.

Hope this was helpful and you are welcome to ask more questions if any.Thanks.
