9 months ago I was out of work and very depressed and I was hospitalized for acute pancreatitis from alcohol abuse and not eating. I was sober for a couple of months after but eventually went back to drinking. Now I am having a bout of the pancreatitis again but not nearly as bad. Still uncomfortable. My left side and left lower back have constant annoying dull pain. It is dificult to lay in bed and be comfortable. I am eating and drinking hardly anything, as that is how they treated it in the hospital. I obviously do not have the IVs with potassium and nutrients, etc. that they were able to give me. My question is can I treat this my self with rest and the right medications or supplements? I can not afford to go to the ER again and spend a week in the hospital. And yes, I have quit drinking and do not plan to return to it. I''ll do whatever it takes. My last drink was Thursday night and the trouble started Friday morning. Thanks.

I guessed that would be your response. Is it possible for me to recover by doing what I am doing even though I realize it is danagerous and not recommended? Is there anything more I can do? Some way to get the electrolytest needed? I do feel better than I did at first.

I hate to give you a "brush off" response but I can't recommend that you stay home and treat this on your own : ( It is technically possible to survive pancreatitis with no medical intervention if your body is able to sustain itself ... however the risk for complication is so great, that it may not be worth it. If you are alone and you were to lose conciousness, there would be no one to intervene and help you. I hate that you are put in this difficult position but I have to recommend that you go to the hospital.

You MAY be able to go to an urgent care clinic for an IV infusion since you are feeling better. They will probably send you to a hospital but depending completely on their evaluation of the situation, they may be able to treat you and send you home, saving you a little money...
