Sent to Health Experts January 22 12:04 p.m.

I suffer from chronic allergies and I''m currently taking xyzal. My right ear feels plugged most of the time, ringing, some hear loss when clogged and I can''t lay on that side of my head or I''ll get vertigo when I wake up. what can this be?

Optional Information:
Female, Age: 40, Connecticut

Already Tried:
Nothing except not sleeping on that side of my head. I feel like there's fluid or an infection and when I get it checked, it's clear! I do know that when I was a baby I had a bad ear infection. My allergist just a couple of years ago told me there was a hole in one of my ear drums that has since fixed itself.

Hello Customer (name blocked for privacy),

It is pssible that your problem is not in the er but mainly in the throat.

A tube called the Eustachian tube connects the throat to the ear. This tube helps in stabilising air pressure inside the air and thus helps in maintaining the balane of the body.

Chronic allergies can cause inflammation of the tissues of the throat causing them to be somewhat swollen. The allergies will also cause swelling of the throat end of the tube, causing it to get blocked. As a result you get the sensation that your ear is blocked and that there is fluid or something inside it.

Laying on that side causes the throat tisues to get more swollen increasing the clogging of the ear and causing vertigo.

Ideally you need to see an ENT specialist and get antibiotics and anti-inflamatories to help the swelling to decrease. Till then, please take the following steps and see if they help:

- Gargle with hot, saline water - mix 2 teaspoonfuls of salt in 1 glass of hot water and gargle thrice daily.

- Steam inhalation - Take a bowl of hot water, and put 2 tsf of salt in it. You can also put menthol in it if you have some. Inhale the steam that rises from the water. You can put a towel over the head as you inhale for quicker relief.

- Drink a glass of warm lemon juice daily. Squeeze a wedge of lemon in a glass of warm water and mix 1 pinch of salt and 1 tablespoonful of sugar for taste. You can increase the amount of water if you find the lemon too sour to taste

- You can suck on hard sweets - the saliva trickling down the throat will be soothing.

- Take an anti-inflammatory like Motrin tablets (500mg twice daily for 5 days), available OTC.

- Improve your immunity by taking a multivitamin multimineral supplement. A tablet of Vitamin C 500mg will help to build up your resistance to infections. Vitamin C is known to be a potent agent against respiratory infections.

- Drink at least 8 - 10 glasses of water daily. Dehydration leaves you more prone to get infections.

I hope this helps.
