Question

blood in stools

Sent to Health Experts May 12, 2005 7:53 p.m.

My 3 year old son has had bright red blood in his stools for the past 3 months. He has been examined for anal fissures and blood work has all come back fine except a slightly elevated liver count, which the doctors says to not be concerned. Any advise on possible diagnosis? He is scheduled for an colonscopy but that isnt for another month. No one seems to be too concerned except me.. Thanks

 Dear Jenn,

How much blood are you talking about? Has he been constipated lately?

Thank you in advance

The blood usually is on the outer lining of the stool and a good amount is on the toilet paper when I wipe him. It does not continue bleeding after I wipe him. His stools appear normal in color and form. He has no diarrhea and does not appear constipated. He is in good health and active. Ive questioned doctors about possible food alergies and he did have a period of about a month on antibotics for ear infections prior to his surgery (tonsil and adnoid removal)and after his surgery to keep infection away. The food alergy theory is that he is too old (just turned 3) and the antibotic theory is that it would have stopped by now. Any advise and/or knowlege of the subject would be helpful. Thanks again for taking the time.

 Dear jenn,

Most of the time blood streaks on the outside of a toddler's stool is a sign of your baby being constipated or maybe having a hemorrhoid inside of the rectum that you are unable to see. Or like you said, maybe a small fissure in the rectum that is just high enough that it can not be seen from the outside examination. Usually because the blood is on the "outside" of the stool and not inside of it, means that it is usually not a serious condition. I know that it is hard, but try not to worry so, until the colonoscopy results are back. This will tell the whole story I'm sure, and the main concern may just be a change in his diet, and adding more liquids to his daily routine. I think that you are right about the allergies and antibiotics, I think that these would have caused other symptoms also a long time ago, and  the blood would have been inside the stool itself as opposed to on the outside of it. You should watch him, and contact your doctor asap if he begins having abdominal pain, If he starts "acting" sick, acquires a fever, or becomes dehydrated. As long as he is acting like a happy, healthy, and  energetic baby, I'm sure everything will be just fine. Also, remember, that bright red blood means that it is happening right now and lower down in the colon or rectum. If it was higher up, the blood would have a brown to brownish red color to it.

Good luck to you and your son, you are in my prayers...
