Over the weekend my temp ran around 97.2 had chills, horrible aches this is all gone but the cough is still here. Been taking Mucinex 12 hour 1 BID phlegm is breaking up in chest somewhat, will an antibotic help? When do you know if you need an antibiotic or just to fight it out?

Hello jrenae,

An antibiotic would be beneficial if you have a bacterial upper respiratory infection. Your symptoms are presumed to be viral unless cultures are performed and return positive. So far you are doing all the right things to help yourself recover from the crud that is sweeping the county this time of year. If you are not running a fever and able to sleep I recommend you ride it out. If the congestion worsens and you become shorter on breath and over the counter meds are not doing the job, then a visit to your health care provider would be a good thing. They would be able to auscultate your lung sounds, do labs and chest xrays if needed to rule out bronchitis and pneumonia,

If you need further clarification I am available.
