Question

An Annoying Cough

Sent to Health Experts August 18, 2005 4:56 p.m.

I have a cough that I get once, sometimes twice a year and it lasts for about 3 months each time I get it. I have learned that four things can cause a cough: 1. asthma 2. allergies 3. post-nasal drip 4. acid reflex disorder. I've had the cough for 11 years. I've only gone to see a doctor about it when someone else has made me. I've gone to two different primary care physicians. Both tried to treat it by giving medication for the above mentioned causes of coughs. I've also had a chest x-ray done. My cough comes from my throat and feels almost like a tickle. I only find it frustrating because it irritates those around me. If it's none of the above mentioned problems, what could be another reason that I get a cough that lasts three months? I went to an alergy and asthma specialist who found nothing wrong. The ear, nose, and throat doctor didn't find anything, either.

The cough started when I was 17. I went to my primary care physician about it when I was 18. I saw a different primary care physician when I was 22. I haven't bothered to investigate it since. Close friends and family think that it might be brought on by stress. If that is the case, how can it be treated?

Hi

If all health care professionals have ruled out the causes you list, and by the sound of it a specialist as well, it could very well be related to stress.

The obvious answer would be try to reduce your stress. You can also see a counselor or psychologist to help you learn to do this.

Here are some articles on reducing stress that might help you as well.
