Question

I have a fear of vomiting. I am having a laparotomy to ...

Sent to Health Experts February 22, 2006 7:27 a.m.

I have a fear of vomiting. I am having a laparotomy to remove an ovarian dermoid cyst and am concerned about the anesthesia. The doctor said it should only take about 30 to 45 minutes. About 17 years ago I had oral surgery to remove all 4 wisdom teeth and tolerated that fine. My doctor said it would be the same type of anesthesia. Is that true that iIf a person tolerates general anesthesia once, they always will?

In most cases yes this does hold true that if you had no problem with anesthesia before you should not encounter any problems with anesthesia this time either. As long as you follow the directions given to you by your physician you should not have any problems with vomiting as this is most common if you eat food or drink liquids after midnight the night before and as long as you do not do this everything should be digested and there should be no problems with vomting and while you are under abesthesia they will be constantly monitoring your vitals constantly.

Relist: I want a different opinion.
I'm not sure if they will use the same anesthesia I had for oral surgery (17 years ago) that they will for my laparotomy.

If you tolerated the prior anesthesia well and encountered no problems you should have no problems with other types of anesthesia as well. Your main concern is following the pre-surgery instructions that they give to you which the most important is no eating or drinking after midnight the night prior to the surgery and if you do have any concerns I feel you should address them with the anesthesiologist who will be more than happy to go over the details of the anesthesia they will be using. I am sure they may not use the same anesthesia since it has been 17 years but many have apprehentions when it comes to anesthesia but the good thing is if you tolerated it well before and follow the pre-operative instructions you should encounter no problems this time. It can better your chances if you do not have any known allergies to medications and should you have any make sure that the attending surgeon and anesthesiologist are aware of them.

If you did fine 17 yrs ago, you should be just fine now. Actually you should be better off. It may not be the exact same type of anesthesia. Over the years it has gotten better with it allowing a person to come right out of it with a lot less effects on a person. So it's nothing I would stress over at all. The anesthesiologist are really great. They will come in and talk with you before the procedure just as the doctor. So just follow the direction given and you will be find Hun.

Best of luck, Hope this helps, If you need anything else please feel free to ask. If you found this helpful don’t forget to click the *accept* button!
