i am a relatively healthy 30 year old female. in the past month, i have suffered two bouts of severe ear pain and throat swelling. my fever comes and goes. this round of pains is different in that i was vomiting a few days ago. my throat continues to swell and i am having trouble sleeping. i went to a doctor the first time and he said there was nothing remarkable about my ears. he tested me for strep and mono, and both were negative. he basically told me to go home and go to bed. is there anything i can do to relieve the pain or get rid of these symptoms?? could this be an allergic reaction to something?

Hello,

You may have posnasal drip causing the sore throat. Allergies and cold virus can do it. Allergies and cold virus can also make your Eustachian tube swell and get closed. When this happen the pressure in the middle ear drops and ear drum because of pressure change gets sucked in and causes pain in the ear. It can also cause fever because the middle ear becomes a closed space and sinus exits gets blocked from cold virus or allergies and bacterias grows inside of this spaces causing fever as a result of sinusitis and the middle ear infection.

I suggest to you to see a Ear-Nose -Throat doctor. May need a CT scan of the sinuses. In the mean time take Claritin tablet and Advil tablet. You may need antibiotic too if doctor find a sinus infection or middle ear infection For more information about post nasal drip please click the link just below:
