Sent to Health Experts January 10, 2007 11:23 p.m.

My seven year old son constantly takes his hands and puts them near his nose and sniffs them and poss. scratches under his nose. In the past he was taking a allergy med. but hasn't for awhile. Is allergies a poss. or could there be something else. He does it over and over and I don't think he even notices anymore. It's almost obsessive.

Optional Information:
Male , Age: 7

Hello,

It is worth mentioning to the pediatrician that you would like to have a referral for your son to see an allergist.

Respiratory allergies typically don't develop before age 2, so now that your son is 7, it is a distinct possibility that he does suffer from allergies. Also, respiratory allergies are difficult to diagnose in kids because they can't describe their symptoms, so allergy testing can confirm a diagnosis of hay fever (allergic rhinitis) as well as identify specific causes, such as pollen, pet dander or dust mites. Most allergy medications are for children older than age 6, so that is also something to discuss with your son's pediatrician. Perhaps allergy medicine could ease his compulsion to touch his nose.

Please let me know if you have questions.
