I am 45 years old and I get very sick only in the winter months, My doctors thinks I should either move to or around ashville north carolina or Arizona, Arizona is out of the question. In the summer I am perfectly fine in New York, winter I am sick every other week and on antibiotics constantly. My question is , how is North carolina in the winter months weather wise? I have allergies that are worse in the winter for me up here. The doctors says my lungs are having trouble staying strong because of all the meds. . I have never smoked but the doc. says my lungs are worse than a smokers. My second question is do you think I would be better off in N.C. and why? Is the air in N.C. drier in winter than here? My name is Laurrie, I have a big decision to make and I have to up root my family. I just want to know if you think I would be better off in N. Carolina. Patiently waiting your reply! Laurrie

Asheville does have better air quality to be honest. It is a nice area that sits on the top of the mountain and is about 45 minutes from Tennessee and just a small distance from Virginia and Kentucky as well. Their less congestion there as far as smoke, smog, pollutants, and if you do well in summer then most likely to springs would not be hard on you as although every state has it's share of pollen, tress allergents, and mold there is less in other areas. I think they mention Ashville due to the air quality most of all and the geneographical location being so high above sea level and feel it will help not only with your breathing and allergies but also because you are having other health issues especially due to the medications that they have to provide you with to get through the winter months. Not only can they affect your lungs but prolonged use of medications such as these and antibiotics can cause not only an immunity to build up so that they become uneffective in being able to fight illness but you have to also consider that prolonged use can effect your kidney and liver functions as well. I can tell you alot about Asheville as I have spend alot of time there before I moved back to Florida and lived about 30 minutes from there for 23 years so if there are any questions you do have about that area do feel free to let me know. I do feel that somewhere like Asheville would be a help to you are far as overall air quality, less pollutants and even though it gets cold there and snows as well the air is drier then it is in an area such as New York and would honestly be better then Arizona in my eyes as it gets so very hot in Arizona and even at night in the summer the heat and humidity are over 100 degrees so that might cause some breathing issues for you in that area. It is flat and the air is cleaner and is dry but I feel due to all that you state that Asheville NC would be better for you and on top of that it is a beautiful and safe place to live but that is just something that would be good in addition to the main reason which is your health. I know it must be hard to sit and consider having to move to an area you have never lived but when you take your health into consideration it is by far easier to get used to a new area then it is to sacrifice your health since not only do you become very sick but also have other issues that could start to be a problem due to all the medications that you have to take. Please do let me know if you do have any other questions but taking into account the types of illness you go through and what can possibly occur with prolonged use of these types of medications I have to agree with Asheville mainly due to knowing the area, amount of feet above sea level, and overall air quality in itself.

So Ashevilles winter would be like our spring? Is that what your saying? Is it humid there in the summer? I was wondering if it was, will the humidity effect my breathing? I know for a fact that I am allergic to black mold is there alot of that there and mildew. I know I would do fine there in the winter but what about summer? Is there alot of jobs? My husband does construction? Why did you leave Asheville?

Yes Asheville get's snow and it is beautiful but you do not have it pile up like it does further north. In fact a couple of the ski lodges not far from Asheville has to make snow sometimes when they are not getting any but when it does snow it is beautiful in the mountains especially on the top where Asheville site. The humidity is not high there where with Arizona and Florida where the humidity is 80% through part of the spring, summer, and even fall. The air there sis not to where you would walk out of your house and have to catch your breathe due to it being so high, but with the elevation you have a cleaner, more brisk air quaity where you can take that deep breathe in and actually enjoy it and nothing like it is in lower elevations or bigger cities where there is so much pollution. There is not as much mold and mildew there when you compare it to other cities or even states. There is more a chance of finding mold there is you had a leak into your wall and did not fix it then finding it in the air. North Carolina has a big construction need as so many buy summer homes or second homes, almost like they used to here in Florida before all the hurricanes cause homeowners insurance to climb so high no one can afford to live here hardly anymore at least without the worry of not having insurance. Now for me I did not leave Ashville, I was from about 30-40 minutes down the mountain from there in Tennessee but we used to spend alot of time in Asheville especially heading up to go skiing in the wintertime and I also had some cousins wo lived there. I left due to the fact my husband was from here in the Tampa area and I had lived in Florida before but moved back to the area because I missed it but when we left to come here again I did not have any family left in the area as they were all older so my situation was different and I do not mind snow and cold if I never had to leave the house if that makes sense. (smile) But now if I were in a situation such as yours could I accept and adapt to a city and area like Ashville? Yes honestly I could so when I saw your post having grown up near there it only made sense for me to answer this as I felt I could give you an honest opinion not only from a medical standpoint but from a personal standpoint also as I could just imagine how it must be to wonder of something like this would be the right thing, but when it comes down to your health honestly there is no wrong as no matter how much you may like a certain area to stay sick all the time is not really enjoying it, and to go somewhere such as Asheville would be by far better then many other places you could go.

Relist: I still need help.
My doctor said Asheville N.C. But I was wondering if I went to say like Concord N.C. will I still be ok or even Linconton? My husband has a job offer there. Do you think my lungs will be alright in the summer there and how is the humidity there? I'm sure winter there for me will be ine. Up here in N.Y. I'M sick only in winter. How is the air in these areas is still drier?I was just wondering if the location really made a differance as long as I moved down there and out of all this up here? Patiently waiting your reply thank you..... Laurrie

Hi Laurrie,

I did check on the specs of Linconton and that city too has a decent elevation as well as is the case with most cities in North Carolina. And if your husband has been able to find work there or in Concord I feel you would do fine in either of these cities also. The humidity is not too high and the air is so much cleaner that I feel not only would your lungs benefit from these areas but so would your allergies and not cause you to be sick all winter. And since you are used to snow in NY these areas would not be worse then what you are used to, and even less most likely. I feel the very best thing for you to do would be to plan a week if possible to travel to North Carolina to see not only Asheville, but Concord and Linconton too. I see you benefiting from these areas far more than you would in Arizona as there the humidity is overbearing in the summer and very hard to breathe in even if you do not have any issues with allergies or your lungs so I am unsure why they would suggest Arizona but if that is out of the question for you that is good as I do not feel that this would be an area that would be healthy for you. Anywhere you go it is going to of course take a period of adjustment but that is to be expected though as far as your health goes I feel even if you went there to locate jobs or housing that would give you an idea of how the air quality and humidity is as well. Please do let me know if I can be of further help to you and thank you for being patient as I wanted to check more into Linconton but from all I have found out in regards to humidity and air quality you should do fine in any of these cities and will be able to stay healthy as well. And you are so very welcome for my help!
