I am having trouble breathing and cannot fall asleep. It's a shortness of breath on inhalation, followed by a wheezy cough in place of exhalation. I am 32, and have never been tested for allergies, but I think that I'm having an allergic reaction to the high pollen count in New York this year. I think the reaction has decended to my lungs, and I am having some kind of asthma attack (I do not have asthma, could this be some kind of temporary, allergic asthma?). It's been like this for the last two nights, and I have got little to no sleep. I do not have health insurance, and would face at least a $500 fee to go to the ER. Do you think I should go to the ER for treatment? I went to a Dr. earlier today ($80), and I think he misdiagnosed me as having an upper respiratory infection, or common cold. This is an intense constrictive feeling in my lungs, and a wheezy dry cough nearly every time I exhale. Vicks vaporub, and Cleratin are not working. Robuttusin helps little.

The cough has persisted and gotten worse since last Thursday (6 days ago). The cough prevents me from resting. Every time I breath in while I'm lying down, I feel an inflammation and my body responds by coughing. I do not have menthol salts at the moment, what do you think about using eucalyptis essential oil instead?

Also, doesn't this seem more like an allergic reaction? My eyes are bloodshot and itchy, the lids are red. My throat feels swollen and irritated. My lungs feel dusty and constricted. ER?

Yes, it is likely to be an allergic reaction. But I dont think a visit to the ER is warranted.

You should try instead with these medications. Eucalyptus oil will also do, but try and get the menthol salts later.
