I have been itching all over my body for the past couple of weeks but just noticed a moment ago a large dark area on my lower leg where the skin looks and feels leathery. What could be causing that? Thank you.

Hi, Dm Daniel..there are many causes of itching like:

Common Causes Of Itching:

  • Sunburn
  • Contact with chemicals
  • Certain infectious diseases
  • Insect bites
  • Allergy
  • Presence of parasites on the body
  • Dryness of skin
  • An unfavorable medication
  • Cold weather
  • Exposure to water and hot baths
  • Skin diseases like Psoriasis, Lichen planus.
The dark patch associated with the whole body itching could be due to a skin condition called LICHEN PLANUS.It is a chronic, itchy skin disease of unknown cause, characterized by small, purplish bumps or patches of skin having fine, gray lines on the surface. Common sites of involvement are the flexor surfaces of wrists, forearms, ankles, abdomen, and sacrum. On mucous membranes (e.g., the mouth), the membranes appear gray and lacy. Episodes of disease activity, of which there are numerous variations, may last for months and may recur.

Topical corticosteroids are often useful. In severe cases, oral corticosteroids may be prescribed. Psoralens plus long-wave ultraviolet light (PUVA) can be effective for chronic lichen planus.
