As long as there is not a family history of allergies to peanuts or tree nuts, they can be introduced at 2 years of age. However, it is best to break them into halves or smaller pieces to minimize the chance of choking.
If you are using peanut butter, never offer a child a spoonful on his/her own, and apply only a small coating to sandwiches with a good amount of jelly-offering small bites only. Peanut butter is incredibly thick, and if it becomes lodged in the throat, it can be impossible to remove via abdominal thrusts (formerly known at the Heimlich maneuver).
