Question

My Grandma is in pain and severe discomfort

Sent to Health Experts February 12, 2006 4:27 p.m.

My 101 year old Grandmother has very thin, painful skin on the surface of her left wrist. It is abouy a 2"x2" area. Thank you for any help you can provide (an ointment to toughen up the thickness of skin perhaps?) The color of her skin is normal, but looks like it is stretched/taut. She also has RA and a bulging hernia on her right side (doctor says she is too old to operate) when she tries to wear a belt, it shifts and doesn't seem to help. Thank yo so very much!

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 101

Already Tried:
my Aunt puts ointment on it - makes it greasy - and massages sore hernia

Hello

Since this is on the wrist there are a couple things you can do. You can wrap it in kerlix, or gauze when she is at risk of hitting it on something.

I've also seen where people take a clean tube sock and cut the toe out then put that over the wrist and arm area. This prevents injury, bruising, and risk of skin tearing.

I recommend eucerin cream (the real thick stuff in a tub) to moisten that area of skin and toughen it up a bit.

Do you have an idea of what is causing the thin, painful skin? Could the ointment make it go away?

Also, do you know of any surgeons performing hernia surgery on people my grandmother's age? Any idea of what can be done to help her with the hernia? Sorry I wasn't more specific. Thank you, Kerry:)

At your grandmothers age, any sort of operation would be potentially dangerous. As long as the hernia can be recessed (pushed back inside) then wearing a spring or elastic truss (avaiable from pharmacist) should keep her reasonably comfortable.

The skin problem again is due to her age. The collagen weakens with age (often worsened by steroids) and can become paper thin. There is no real cure for this. Moisturisers will keep the skin supple and reduce the risk of tearing, but apart from that all you can do is protect the area.
It may be the treatment for her RA has contributed to her skin being so thin, but as I say its really the age factor.
Hope this helps.
