My daughters mother, who is 48 yrs, is going through a bout with breast cancer. She had surgery last week to remove the tumor. Yesterday she called me saying that the doctor said they were not able to remove the entire tumor and they have now found another under her left arm (cancerous). The doctor has given 2 options....... 1) attempt chemotherapy in hopes it destroys it or 2) remove the breast and go for treatment. She also mentioned that the doctor said that it was in the glands.

My question is that if the tumor is under her arm, what would removing the breast do? Also, I was told by friends in the medical field that because it has entered the glands, it is not a good sign going forward and the cancer could take over within a year. My daughter is 9 yrs and if things are as bleek as they are looking, I need to know where I stand in this during her battle. What is your opinion on this?

Thank You, Chris W.

As always in these cases the best knowledge on these matters is the doctor. With that said however your friend has the right to seek another opinion. I assume her doctor is an Oncologist, cancer doctor, if not she should see one. Now as far as removal of the breast is concerned. When doctors remove a breast they generally remove lymph nodes and glands that go under the arm pit also. In this way the cancerous breast and the cancerous lymph nodes and glands are also removed at the same time. This procedure is called a "radical mastectomy" and is a common treatment for the cancer you describe. Best of luck. Images available only to Customers.
