I have pain in my left upper arm that comes and goes. It is a deep penetrating pain that comes on without reason. I don't have a history of heart related disease but do have osteoarthritis in my shoulders and joints. What could possibly be causing the pain and how concerned should I be?

In which arm are you having pain -- or is it in both arms? What part(s) of your arm(s) hurt? Have you noticed any pattern regarding the pain -- what seems to bring it on -- what seems to make it go away?

Have you had a recent examination in order to rule out heart problems?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

I certainly did overlook information mentioned in your original post, I apologize...

In fairness, I did ask if you had been examined in order to rule out a heart problem as a possible cause of your pain. Unfortunately, genetics are only a part of the picture with heart disease (or any disease for that matter). Because of this, a lack of family history does not guarantee that you do not have heart problems.

Were I in your situation, I would get my heart checked out.

With regard to other possible causes of your arm pain -- injury, a pinched nerve or a disease process (such as a tumor) come to mind. If your other arthritic symptoms are confined to your joints -- that would seem to point away from arthritis as a cause. However, pain can sometimes manifest some distance away from the actual cause/source.

With a general symptom of this nature -- one that has so many possible causes -- diagnosis is, more often than not, a process of elimination.

Seeing a rheumatologist and/or an orthopedist may help you to find an answer.

Again, I apologize for my lack of focus in the beginning.

Let me know if you need more input. If not, thanks for the opportunity to assist you... Please honor my efforts by Clicking the green 'Accept' button (located within this post -- above-right). Adding a bonus -- should you wish to do so -- would be warmly welcomed.

Good Luck!
