Costochondritis
is an inflammation of cartilage and bones-in your case
where the ribs attach to the sternum (breastbone). This can actually be
very
painful. It is usually caused by trauma, but can also be from a recent
cold/viral infection. Activity, exercise, breathing, and just touching
the area
can cause excruciating pain. Since there are nerves that branch away
from this
area, you could also have arm or shoulder pain. Treatment is either ice
or heat
to the area, whichever works in your case (person to person this
varies). Also
take ibuprofen type drugs to nelp with the pain and to decrease
inflammation. Cortisone shots can be given, but as a last resort. Stay
away from activities
that seem to cause the most discomfort! Symptoms should be gone in 6
months, and
can return at a later time!
