Question

Pain in rib cage- back- heart/lung problem?

Sent to Health Experts October 07, 2006 10:59 p.m.

Hi there- I have a lengthy question. I recently moved and have been sleepign on the floor and air mattress...we haven't had a bed for about a month. The trip out there was gruelin gin that we drove over 1000 miles and I was constantly turning to see if my 2 1/2 year old was okay in the car etc. I also have a 70 lb labradoodle to contend with. So now I have extreme pain in my intercostal muscles over my heart. The pain radiates around my breast under my arm and to my usual spot of contention my left scapula and subscapula. Motrin alleviates the pain...It can be extreme at times. I would figure if it was my heart- the pain would be persistant. Also- I ahve a slight rattle in my lungs. I get the pain mostly now during the late afternoon -evening hours. Istopped going to the chiro- as I think his massage machine that was quite harsh was aggrevating it. The massage therapist does wonders- and told me about ice therapy. Which aggrevates it but then lessens the pain. I thought the rattling was from the almsot clicking sound my muscles were making when I exhaled over my ribs. But since the pain has lessened I still have a bit of rattling that comes and goes. We also moved into a house that used to have cats. Although environmentally cleaned...I had a bit of a reaction to them when I came in. I am lightheaded but I am always that way..and we just moved from teh east coast to the Denver area- where it is hard to catch my breath anyway! Please advise- Iam 36- recently had blood gases and chest xray (within a year- due to back problems causing what it felt like was a heart attack last year)

You may have costochondritis which is an inflammation of cartilage and bones-in your case the area that was stressed by constant turning in the 1000 mi trip could do it!. This can actually be very painful. It is usually caused by trauma, overuse of the area [such as in packing/unpacking!] but can also be from a recent cold/viral infection. Activity, exercise, breathing, and just touching the area can cause excruciating pain. Since there are nerves that branch away from this area, you could also have arm or shoulder pain. Treatment is either ice or heat to the area, whichever works in your case (person to person this varies). Also take ibuprofen type drugs to help with the pain and to decrease inflammation. Cortisone shots can be given, but as a last resort. Stay away from activities that seem to cause the most discomfort! Symptoms should be gone in 6 months, but can return. A hands-on eval and a good history taking should tell the doc whether this is what you have.
As for the rattling sound, you could be reacting to the offensive cat allergens that are left in the house or something in your new environment. A good listen should be enough for the doc to hear the rattles or wheezes; you may need an inhaler for any spasm in the airways.
