You may have costochondritis which is an inflammation of cartilage and bones-in your case the area that was stressed by constant turning in the 1000 mi trip could do it!. This can actually be very painful. It is usually caused by trauma, overuse of the area [such as in packing/unpacking!] but can also be from a recent cold/viral infection. Activity, exercise, breathing, and just touching the area can cause excruciating pain. Since there are nerves that branch away from this area, you could also have arm or shoulder pain. Treatment is either ice or heat to the area, whichever works in your case (person to person this varies). Also take ibuprofen type drugs to help with the pain and to decrease inflammation. Cortisone shots can be given, but as a last resort. Stay away from activities that seem to cause the most discomfort! Symptoms should be gone in 6 months, but can return. A hands-on eval and a good history taking should tell the doc whether this is what you have.
As for the rattling sound, you could be reacting to the offensive cat allergens that are left in the house or something in your new environment. A good listen should be enough for the doc to hear the rattles or wheezes; you may need an inhaler for any spasm in the airways.
