Kentucky85,
If x-rays revealed that there was no fracture, it is most likely a bad sprain. The best treatment for a sprain is RICE- rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Ice can be used 20 to 30 minutes, three or four times daily. After the first day or two you can apply heat for the next 48 hours to help relieve the pain. You can also use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pain relief. These would include Advil, Aleve, or Motrin. If nothing over the counter works, then you will need to get prescription pain relievers through your doctor. You should also be using a splint for immobilization.
