Dear swweettie,

Often people with diabetes are prone to infections, and even though your diabetes is diet-controlled, it is possible that you could have dental abscesses such as the one you are describing. It sounds, however, like you have a systemic joint disease that should be evaluated by a rheumatologist. You may have a rheumatologic disease (these often run in families which is why I asked about your history) that often happens in young women around your age that can cause an immunodeficiency that can weaken your immune system and cause you to get infections. Your doctor or a rheumatologist can do this by sending some standard tests including an erythrocyte sedimentation rate, c-reactive protein, anti-nuclear antibody, as well as some other tests to see if you body is in an inflammatory state. This would explain the infections and the multiple joint disease.

Please let me know if I can answer any more questions.
