I have painful arthritis in my neck and hands and because I take a lot of medication, my doctor doesn't want me to take pain medicine. Is there a salve that can ease the pain?

As with other arthritic conditions, initial treatment of arthritis is conservative:

Rest or change activities to avoid provoking pain;

Take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen to reduce inflammation.

Ice the shoulder for 20 to 30 minutes two or three times a day to reduce inflammation and ease pain.

Dietary supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate may be helpful.
