Hi,
By what you are describing it seems that you are having Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (Jaw joint). It classically presents as pain on opening mouth, a clicking sound in the joint with movement, sometimes associated with headache and radiating pain to the fore head. There are nomerous causes - repetetive habit of opening the mouth several times a day, bad posture with protruding the lower jaw, habit of grinding teeth. Rarely it may be caused by Arthritis - may be rheumatoid arthritis.
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) is a self limiting disease and usually resolves on its own. It might take a long time for complete recovery, though the acute pain subsides in a few days. Treatment is -
- take anti-inflammatories like Tylenol/Motrin
- Apply hot fomentation to the affected area
- Give your jaw a rest
- Don't open the jaw wide
- Take small bites while eating
If your condition does not improve in the next few days then you need to see your doctor to rule out other causes like rheumatoid arthritis.
