I'm taking a beta blocker and Lipitor since having a stent put in a year ago. I'm taking an 81 mg asperin and have been taking Tylenol extra strength for arthritis -- two 500 mg daily. The Tylenol seems to cause me to feel "out of it" and I've been looking for some other arthritis med. I've been told Ibuprophen and regular asperin react badly with the beta blocker as does Celebrex or other anti-inflamatory meds. Would glucosamine/chondroitin tablets also be incompatible with a beta blocker; or an over the counter med called SAM-e. Thanks for your response.

If the tylenol tablet contains ONLY Tylenol (ie no caffeine or codeine) then it should not make you feel 'out of it' or unwell. It is the best tolerated painkiller, although it has no anti-inflammatory action. Taking ibuprofen regularly does have a slight negative effect on blood pressure control through kidney function, however in the event that the pain/immobility of arthritis causes real problems with Quality of Life, doctors will make the decision to use ibuprofen in this situation. Celebrex and other Cox 2 medication have been viewed with caution in cardiovascular disease owing to results of some studied and I would avoid in your case unless there were no other options.

The supplements have not been subjected to the same clinical trials as ordinary medicine and it is difficult to say with certainty wheher they impact on blood pressure control, however I see no reason why you couldn't start them and monitor your blood pressure for the first month to see how you get on.
