Ankle pain

Sent to Health Experts May 27, 2006 3:20 p.m.

My Mother suffered a severe ankle fx several yrs ago with resulting surgery and extensive hardware. She now has swellling/pain/inflammation. We have visited with her surgeon and internist. She has taken diuretics, anti- inflammatories, etc. She has tried compression stockings but she cries with pain when I put them on take them off. We don't know where to turn. She no longer wants to walk. Please help. I can not find an answer. My mother is in her late 80's and this condition has greatly affected her activities of daily living. Doctors are not providing the solution.

Hi, She may have arthritis settled in to the fractured ankle. I suggest to you to get a second opinon from another Orthopedic surgeon with an experiece in foot and ankle surgery .Sometimes removal of the some hardwares from the anle or fusion surgery to the old fracture site may decrease the pain and make it easy to her to walk.

The orthopedic surgeon told us at that time of surgery, that if my Mother ever injured her ankle again, nothing could be done surgically--nothing left to fuse--her ankle is practically all hardware--she was in surgery for several hours. If her ankle was reinjured, she would be wheelchair bound---this particular surgeon has had many years of experience dealing with foot/ankle fractures
