Swollen glands not resolved

Sent to Health Experts July 08 12:11 PM

Hello, I went to the ER because my glands were very swollen (the salivary glands). My face looks very bloated due to the swelling.   The ER nurse told me that I just needed rest/fluids/Tylenol and it should resolve itself after a few days. It has been three days and I have not seen much of an improvement. Should I be worried? I do not have any fever at all or other problems; the swelling just is not improving with Tylenol/rest/fluids. I need to get out of the house and back to work, but am reluctant because of what's happening. Can you advise?

hello!I need some more information so that I can help you.

You say "Salivary glands". There are several types and positions of salivary glands. There are the parotid glands which are located in the upper cheeks in the general position just over your "cheek bones" . Then there are the sublingual glands under your tongue just behind the lower front teeth. The other major glands are located just under the jawbone onto the area of your neck.

Can you tell me where you are swollen?   Is there any pain? Are you unusually tired?

Does anything help it? When you put on heating pads or ice packs does the swelling go down??

Thanks

Reply to DrAustin's Post: The glands in question are the parotid glands. I do not really feel any pain, just discomfort when eating and a little tingling. I've tried warm compresses and ice but it doesn't seem to help too much with the swelling. And I'm not unusually tired...I have been getting alot of rest.

you need to see a doctor on Monday and be tested for several things. You could have mono or mumps. There are other auto-immune diseases (like arthritis only the target is soft-tissue, like salivary glands) that would be involved. There ARE treatments for each of these conditions and the sooner you get treated the sooner you will feel better. Good luck to you!!
