I have had 2 rotator cuff surgeries in 1 shoulder and the tear was so large that the surgery did not work. I have been told that I would need a shoulder replacement but because I am not in pain I am waiting to have it.   I was told that arthritis has started and would get worse and that is when the pain would start.
Is the arthritis due to my age (71) or because there is no rotator cuff there?

Shoulder arthritis typically affects patients over 50 years of age. It is more common in patients who have a history of prior shoulder injury. There is also a genetic predisposition of this condition, meaning shoulder arthritis tends to run in families.

Reply to V. Yetimyan   M.D.'s Post: There is no family history of arthritis. Are you saying that the shoulder injury could trigger arthritis setting in? I stumbled over something on the floor and jerked my arm and could not raise my arm. I had torn the rotator cuff and bicep muscle). Before the accident, I had a rotator cuff and now I have none. The shoulder is hanging but I am not in pain.
