My hands have been swollen and hurting for the past 6 ...

Sent to Health Experts August 16, 2006 1:59 p.m.

My hands have been swollen and hurting for the past 6 months. Some days the pad of my palms, right below my fingers, hurt so bad when touched that I have trouble holding on to anything(can't drive). I have problems making a fist and lately when I do and release it it feels like the joints of certain fingers are jumping out of joint. There are times when I have burning sensations in my hands as well as pain. Some nights my hads wake me up even though I am taking medications for sleep.

Good afternoon,

What have you tried to relieve the pain? How long has this been going on?

This has been going on for approximately 6 mos. At this time I am taking the generic for celexa (30m)and taking 1500m of relafen a day. I have had carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand 20 yrs ago and I know that isn't the problem. I also have that in my left hand and it bothers me periodically but have been able to control it with a brace so far. For years I have had problems with my upper back swelling and my sed rate(?) is elevated. I am also taking 2m of requip for RLS at night. When I first get up in the morning, my legs hurt also.

Hello again,

It sure sounds like you have had alot to deal with with the pain that you are having.

Given all the medications that you are on you probably have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. You mentioned that your sed rate is elevated which generally means that there is an inflammatory process going on in your body.

The swelling of your hands and the redness in the palms are and indication of inflammation which is probably due to the rheumatoid arthritis or an autoimmune disease process.

You may wish to consider seeing your physician for re-evaluation of the medications that you are taking. It could very well be that they need to be adjusted, changed or a pain medication added.

If you have not been evaluated by a rheumatologist, I would highly recommend it. Evaluation for autoimmune disease process' may help to better identify what may also be contributing to your symptoms.

I hope that I have provided some guidance for you. I wish you the best.
