Hello,
The space behind the knee, called the popliteal space contains a large number of large vessel running from the upper leg to the calves. It also contains ligaments annd tendons.
Swelling , even without pain can occur due to a condition called Baker's cyst. A small pouch or sac that communicate with the knee joint is present just above the calf muscles . Fluid from the knee can collect in this pouch and cause a swelling just above the calf muscles behind the knee joint. It is usually an early sign of osteoartritis, rheumatoid arthritis or it may be due to overuse of the knee.
An ultrasonogram can be done to diagnose the cyst. Usually a corticosteroid injection into the joint is enough to decrease the swelling. Sometimes, however, if the cyst is very large and cannot be cured by injections, an operation may be necessary.
Please contact an orthopedist ( a bone doctor) for a check up and treatment.
I hope this helps.
