Possible Hip Injury

Sent to Health Experts September 08 04:30 PM

On August 6th of this year I blacked out and fell into my bathtub. Thank God no water was in it. The reason I blacked out is because my blood sugar bottomed out from not eating that day. My question is this: when i fell i hit my hip and since then I have had trouble with pain when on it for a period of time. Not only does my hip hurt at the top of the pelvic area on my left side after a while it begins to radiate down the back of my leg and the side of my leg. By the end of my day I am limping and can barely climb the stairs to my house or drive home. I am a Customer Service Manager and I have to be on my feet the whole 12 hours that i am there. Please help.

I'm sorry to hear that you're in so much pain! As someone who has had to suffer with pain myself, I know it can be miserable.

I think you need to pay a visit to your physician. I assume that after the accident you were seen and examined at an emergency room or by your physician, and hopefully they took a look at the hip. It is certainly possible that they missed something the first time around.

Pain that radiates down your leg is actually pretty typical of a back issue, perhaps a bad disc in your spine. Falling into the tub could also have aggravated a disc in your spine, and it may have herniated a bit ("slipped" out of place). So your hip pain with radiation could also be related to that.

In any event, make an appointment with your physician, and they will be able to being or continue to workup, to figure out what is going on here. It could be a hip problem (there may have been a fracture - and these must be treated!), or it could be a back problem, but either way, it would benefit from a visit to your physician or local emergency room.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions - I'm more than happy to try and help.

Take care - Dr. Fay

Reply to Jonathan Fay, M.D.'s Post: NO one has looked at it. The very next day I went to my OB/GYN and i guess i was far enough down on the table so he grab my legs to move me down and i told him that it hurt very much when he did it. he told me i probably bruised it and kept on with the examination. He did not give any thing for pain because he doesn't do that.
I just figure I will have to deal with it because i have to have surgery on the 19th of this month for a hysterectomy. What i am especially worried about is that hip and side already has arthritis in it from my sports and gymnastic days and carrying my children on that side.

Well, I think that you should have it looked at. If you have arthritis in the joint, then it is possible to aggravate that arthritis with an injury - and you may have done that. But people can break their hips and not always know it, and this can be disastrous. And if the pain does radiate, then it could also be a back problem. And although most back related pain resolves on its own, without any intervention, I always think that it is better to have it looked at rather than not.

I hope you feel better, either way.

Take care - Dr. Fay
