what can i do about chronic pain in my right leg, both the knee, thigh and hip area? I have have bursitis in the right hip and have tried cortizone injections, physical theraphy, I haOTC meds, and it still hurts most of the time. I also had an MRI on my hip. Recently my right knee started hurting. I am in chronic pain almost every day at some points in the day. I am 38 years old and was a cheerleader in high school. i believe I may have one leg slightly longer than the other so that may have an effect. Are there any solutions to get rid of this problem and the pain?

i dont believe it is sciatica. I don't have pain down the back side on my buttucks or leg nor down to my foot. I was thinking it was more of joint or arthritis related. I have been to an orthopedist. That is who sent me to physical theraphy, ordered the MRI and gave me cortizone injections. I have had the hip problem for 3-4 years (after my second child) and the knee problem just started a week or two ago. Sometime the pain radiates down the front of my thigh. The symptomatic treatment isn't doing much so far.

Hello,

It is unlikely that joint pains or arthritis can occur in the joints of only one side of the body.

Since the problem with your hips started after the birth of your child, I believe that it is spinal in origin. A lot of stress is placed on the lower spine during late pregnancy and delivery, especially in the position in which you have to be in during the delivery. A herniated spinal disc is known to occur at this time.

Either a spinal disc or a misaligned muscle or ligament can put pressure on the sciatic nerve at this point. Even if you do not have pain radiating down your buttocks, you do have pain radiating down the front of the thigh. Although the pain in your knee can be due to arthritis, i feel that Sciatica cannot be ruled out.

I feel that you should ask for an Xray fo the spine as well as a NVC test of the sciatic nerve.

And, yes, treatment of pain due to sciatica does not help much. Physiotherapy and painkillers are the only options available .

I wish I could have helped you more.

Reply to Dr.M.D.Mazumdar, MD's Post: I had a c-section on both deliveries. The second one was a scheduled C-section.
This pain can be very debilitating. It worsens when I do a lot of walking (like when grocery shopping etc). Since I am not very old I am hoping this isn't something that I have to live with for the rest of my life and if so, i can't bear it becoming worse. So far my diagnoses have been bursitis-you think it is more likely a nerve problem rather than a joint problem?

Hello,

Since it has affected all the joints of the right leg and not on the left leg, I believe that it is a nerve problem. A joint problem should have affected at least one joint of the left leg.

Also since it has affected only the leg and not joints of the arms, I suspect that it is spinal in origin, a herniation or compression at a point where only the lower body is affected, not the upper body.

I believe that you ask for a thoough evaluation of your spine with Xrays, MRIs and also a bone density scan.

I hope this helps.
