Sent to Health Experts June 29 11:51 AM

I've ben experiencing bouts of what appears to be hives that show up as raised Whelts that itch beyond explanation. When the whelt start to leave my lips, eyelids, or face swells. Most of the time I end up taking an antihistamine to relieve the swelling and itching. I can go months wihout an episode and sometimes I can have them day after day. I have also began experiencing stiffness in my hip joints. What can this be?

The problems may or may not be related. It is possible that you have "idiopathic urticaria" (hives, itching with no known reason) and degenerative arthritis unrelated to each other. It is also possible that you have an autoimmune problem causing both problems together. You should ask your doctor to investigate both possibilities. Blood tests for rheumatoid factor, antinuclear antibodies would be used to investigate autoimmune disorder. I would also obtain a CBC, sed rate and blood chemistry panel to include tests of liver and kidney functon. I would also obtain xrays of the hip joints to evaluate the possibility of degenerative or other kinds of arthritis. I hope that this was helpful.

Reply to D. Baron, MD's Post: My aunt has had lupus for as long as I can remember. But I've really never know the sypmtoms of this disorder. I'm also African-American and have heard that in recent years the Sarcodosis is plauging people of color. Aren't both of these disorders Auto-immune diseases?
