Hello:

If the big toe is broken, and you are treated for this, it will usually be immobilized. This is done to minimize pain because you can't set a toe in a cast when it is broken, like you would an arm. If it is causing you pain then you cna take Motrin or Ibuprofen as they are ant-inflammatory pain medication. You can also apply ice to the injury to help reduce the swelling.

You state that you have already had an evaluation completed. If the treating physician didn't splint the toe, then I wouldn't do it either. He most likely has reasons. Perhaps he wants you to be able to monitor it or if the injury is very recent, he doesn't want to put compression (pressure) on it realizing that it will continue to swell.

If it has been evaluated and appears to be creating more discomfort than it was initially, I would suggest that you return to the treating physician for a follow up. Treating a minor scrape at home is OK, but I don't recommend this for anything like you are describing.

If this information has been helpful, then please do ACCEPT. Positive feedback is also appreciated. If I cna help you further please let me know.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
