Question

I have a one month old son, who by the doctor's well

Sent to Health Experts March 03, 2007 7:21 a.m.

I have a one month old son, who by the doctor's well baby appointments has deemed him very healthy, very active, great reflexes and range of motion. He weighs 10lbsand is 21 1/2 inches long. He's a constantly moving little boy with arms and legs going. No problems. Now, here's the question, a set of his grandparents have started to stretch his arms and legs. They take and force his legs and arms to be straightened all the way out before releasing him. I know when they get his arms out sometimes they will spring back due to their pulling them out. Is this necessary? Is this safe? Can they hurt him doing this? Thanks!

Hello,

I am afraid that the grandparents can harm the baby when they pull on his arms and legs. Sometimes the joints may get twisted or there may be injury to the muscles when they get stretched. The baby's tissues are very tender and delicate and an adult may find it difficult to judge when too much pressure is being applied to them.

Since your baby is healthy and active, there is no need to stretch his limbs. Although massage does help to improve a baby's health, this should only be done by someone who is trained to do baby massage.

Please explain to the baby's grandparents that stretching his limbs are quite unnecessary.

I hope this helps.
