I've recovered from a sinus infection which I had over
Sent to Health Experts May 31 07:05 PM

I've recovered from a sinus infection which I had over a week ago and now have a relentless harsh and loud cough which I believe comes from post-nasal drip. I've had this before and cough for up to two months. When I talk or lie down, it is the worst. It is a dry cough, but I can feel a sticky mucus in the back of my throat. I have no other cold/flu/ or sinus symptoms. My nose is not runny, and anything that I can manage to blow or spit out is clear. Please help me calm this cough and stop the tickle in my throat. I even wake from sleep to cough. I have tried Robitussin DM, Halls cough drops, Cepacol throat spray and warm tea. All provide only very temporary relief. I must cough every 30 seconds throughout the day. My throat and ears ache from the noise and effort. Please help.

I would not be suprised if you have some asthma. Asthma often presents as a dry cough which is often worse at night. There is a strong association between asthma a sinusitis.

Infection anywhere in the respiratory tract - including the sinsuses can aggravate the asthma symptoms by triggering bronchospasm. For information on asthma check out this link: http://www.aafa.org/

I have had good results with treating patients with your symptoms with 2-4 weeks of inhaled corticosteroids and/or bronchodialator (Pulmicort and Proventil are examples of each, and Advair is a inhaler that contains both classes of medication)

The other thing your physician may want to consider is the use of a nasal steroid such as Flonase which may reduce some of your symptoms

Reply to Family Physician's Post: I have been checked for asthma and don't have it. I only get a cough like this every two years or so, but it lasts forever. What else could you recommend? Thank you for your time.

Despite having been told that you don't have asthma, some infections trigger the same hyperactivity in the airways. I still have good results with these type of symptoms with Advair (the combination of a steroid and a long acting bronchodialator)

Flonase may also help - as it will treat any allergic rhinitis that could be contributing to the symptoms.
