I lived in a home for four years and started having sevear asthma type reactions immeditely. I had several incidences of attacks bad enough that I had to visit the ER several times. We thought that it was the old carpet in the house but have discovered that there is mold in high levels in that ortion of the house. Which by the wy is where I spend most of my time - awakd, studing, sleeping.

I have been out of the house 5 weeks, but am continuing that experience SOB, wheezing, etc. Could my lungs have received any permenant damage from the long exposure to the mold toxinszz/

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 66

Already Tried:
Have been treated with Prednisone, Advair, Singulair, multiple other medications and am just now suspecting the problem was mold in the house.

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),

It is possible to get a fungal infection in your lungs. However in your circumstances I believe the possibility is remote.

Asthma can be caused by anxiety as well as an alergic reaction to house or dust mites. An interesting study done by German phycisians indicates that as much as 80% of asthma is caused by reactions to housemites. Of course that is the German experience and may not relate to the U.S. My recommendations are:

1. Visit your phycisian to take a sputum sample to check for evidence of fungal infection. I would recommend asking the phycisian about a chest exray as well for the same reason. Although is this is big guns right now.

2. Have your phycisian check you for alergies to mites.

3. Take some dust samples from the house and have them checked for mites.

4. take samples of the mold to see if there are "storage mites" living there as well. Mites in mold can cause allegies and asthma.

Here is a web site that speaks about the relationship between housemites and asthma. http://www.housedustmite.org/
