I have been have back pain on the left side of my back underneath my shoulder blade. It hurts alittle when I breathe but it really hurts after I have been lying down all night. When I wake up in the morning it hurts so much...especially when I breathe and after awhile the pain almost goes away. I''ve had a back x-ray which showed nothing. I have been sick with cold like symptoms for about a week. What could be causing the pain when I breathe after I wake up in the morning. I am not a smoker.

It has been there for about three weeks. I usually lay on my back so I don't really know if it is different if I lay on one side or the other. I have a slight temp and a slight cough. I am taking IOPHEN-C NR LIQUID QUA one teaspoon every four hours. I don't have any other disease that I know of. I am not sure if advil relieves it because it usually subsides a half hour or so after I get up in the morning.

I had an xray so wouldn't that show lung infection? ex: pneumonia or pleurisy?

Just so I can be clear...I had an x-ray of my back...which I believe that they were checking for lung infection. Are you saying that I might not have a detectable infection yet of my lung? If it was just starting then it wouldn't show up? What is x-ray with effusion? And should I have that? If I had a lung infection would it only hurt mostly after laying down for a long period of time?

Yes in the early stage it may not show up if there is minimal infection. Regarding Xray with effusion I was referring to your term pleurisy which means inflammation of the pleura , the membrane like covering of the lung.
Inflammation of this pleura may cause fluid to accumulate which is called effusion . At that stage it produces sufficient opacity to be seen by X ray.
Though lung infection usually does not hurt mostly after laying down for a long period of time but some cough only gets worse on waking up in the morning.
