I would suspect that you have a recurrent herniated disc. The fact that the pain woke you from sleep is somewhat concerning.

If you have any of the RED FLAGS - weakness, urinary problems, loss of sensation etc - then I would see someone ASAP - and your may need to have an urgent CT of your back performed if the examination suggest a serious problem.

Here is an excellent article on the management of back pain (written for family physicians)

Most people find that heat helps relax muscles better - although either can be used depending on how it makes it feel - local application of heat/ice is NOT going to do anything a a currative nature - more symptomatic treatment - whichever seems to help you best.

Laying flat - with your knees bent can help at times.

The weight gain could be from a number of things (Most people gain weight - myself included because we end up eating a little too much, and do less than we should) Other things that could cause this - fluid retention (are your ankles or abdomen swollen??)

There are two type of protein - Albumin and globulin. Depending on which is elevated would make a difference. Here is some information on protein levels.

Caution: If the globulin were the element that was elevated it COULD suggest a problem such as multiple myeloma which CAN cause back problems including compression fractures

Reply to Family Physician's Post: They swell after more now, or it may be that I notice more. I feel huge, just plain uncomfortable. The Internist her felt that it was due to the winter, but this is not normal for me by any means, the last time I gain this much weight was when I was pregnant. I do not eat any differently. It is very much of a concern. I was tested for diabetes and that was negative.

Based on your constellation of symptoms - abnormal lab reports, weight gain, swelling, and SEVERE sudden back pain - I would suggest being seen in regards to the back pain.

Did you have a chance to check the article I sent you?
