Most often, musculoskeletal strain is responsible for childhood and adolescent back discomfort. The pain frequently responds to rest, anti-inflammatory medications and an exercise program. Other more serious diagnoses must always be given consideration. Rounded back (Scheuermann's kyphosis), stress fracture of the spine (spondylolysis), slipped vertebrae (spondylolisthesis), infection and tumor are among these.

Reply to V. Yetimyan   M.D.'s Post: Ihave taken her to two doctors and they sort of brush it off. This child is in excellent health, according to examinations, she is very active, has excellent posture and has not had any accidents. It is quite strange that her back hurts so much at night she cannot sleep. If walking or sitting, after a while she must lay down because her back hurts so much. I have tried all the methods you suggest but to no avail. It is at the base of her back, always in the same spot she says it hurts. I have even ,desperately, resorted to a chiropractor, who said there was a "barb" in the location. He has 'cracked' or whatever they call it and she has temporary relief but it never lasts more than two days. I know I cannot continue such methods but I am at a loss and do not know what sort of doctor to take her to that will take it seriously.
