Question

cause control birth heart

Sent to Health Experts September 19, 2005 2:17 p.m.

The other day i was walking around and my vision became patchy, like how people explain it when they have a migraine headache, then my lips, nose and left hand became numb. To me this sounds like a TIA. My heart rate was not increased i was also not hot or i didn't feel either of these two things. I do smoke and i also take birth control but i am only 22 so i dont think it could have been a tia. I was just wondering if there was something else that could cause these symptoms. I do have a past with being iron anemic.

This very well could have been a TIA. If it happens again, I would get checked out in person by a doctor. Has your blood pressure been elevated?

Hope that helps,

Kerry

My blood pressure always stays between 107/89 and 115/96 or so, it have never been higher than this. As a matter of fact just before this happened i checked my blood pressure and it read 107/? my bpm was 92 though, maybe that has something to do with it. My friend read something on the internet that said that it could have been low blood sugar. My mother has a history of both low blood sugar and strokes. I dont eat very healthy and i eat a ton of sweet things. So maybe it could be low blood sugar?

Hi

Your blood pressures are a little on the higher side, but not overly high. I would keep checking it, and see if it relates to the episodes.

It could be hypoglycemia as well.....do these occur when you haven't eaten in awhile?

What causes hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia can occur for a number of reasons:

  • Delaying or skipping a meal
  • Eating too little food at a meal
  • Getting more exercise than usual
  • Taking too much diabetes medicine, especially insulin, sulfonylureas, or meglitinides
  • Drinking alcohol

What are the symptoms of hypoglycemia?

You feel shaky, nervous, tired, sweaty, cold, hungry, confused, irritable or impatient. It's always important to test to be sure that you actually are having low blood sugar.

I hope this helps,

i really only eat once to twice a day, these episodes have only happened two maybe three times in my life and with enough time between occurances to not be able to remember when exactly it happened only that it did occur. I wasnt drinking or really doing anything out of the ordinary, just walking( only for a short time and i wasnt hot). i thought that my blood pressure was slightly on the lower side? because isnt 120/80 normal? it had been about 4 hours since i ate actually, i had chinese food before we went out. so i guess maybe i should go to the doc sometime soon, what should i have him check for? and can a normal family practice doc do the tests required to find out what happened?

You can start with your family doctor. A thorough physical with blood work will be in order. The doctor will go from there if there is anything out of the order with the above.

I was just thinking about you and had an idea.

How much fluid do you drink each day? Not counting caffienated or alcoholic beverages. You may be a bit dehydrated when these episodes happen. Be sure to get at least 8-10 glasses of water, juice etc a day. You should drink enough of these things so that when you urinate, it looks clear or very light yellow. Sometimes dehydration can cause similar symptoms.

I hope I have helped you today. Please consider clicking on the accept button to give me a rating.

Thanks in advance, and let us know what the doctor says.
