Question

Why is my period so long?

Sent to Health Experts October 18, 2006 9:45 a.m.

I am on birth control, but skip week 4 often becasue of the headaches and craps that I get. I missed a pill in week 2 and now I have been on my period for more than 2 weeks and that is not normal for me, what could be causing the extended period?

Thank you for answering my questions.

With some people missing a pill or not taking the pill at the same time everyday will cause you to start your period. When I was on birth control pills I had to switch to different kinds because I would start automatically if I missed a pill or did not take it on time. Usually when this happens, the pill that you are on are not strong enough for you. Also you not taking the full pack of pills could have something to do with it. A prescription strength of ibuprofen always helped me with the cramps. Usually 400-800mg every 4 to 6 hours before your period usually will work. If you do not stop in a couple of days, I would start a new pack of pills. Next month if you have the same problem then I would mention this to my doctor. If you have anymore questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you,
Pam Russell RN

I was also recently diagnosed with PCOS and a hypothyroid...could these be contributing?

Yes there could be a good chance that this has something to do with it. Hypothyroid affects lots of things going on in the body. With hypothyroidism, it will slow down your metabolism. It affects alot of the major organs. As soon as you become adjusted to the medication for this, then you should feel a big difference.

Thank you,
