Question

HI am a 25 year old female who got off birth control ...

Sent to Health Experts November 19, 2007 11:27 a.m.

HI am a 25 year old female who got off birth control in July. I am on nexium, Metformin, prenatal vitamin, and took clomid day 5-9 to get pregnant. Had the bump before taking clomid. I have had a lump on my shin(closer to my ankle). It has been there about 6 weeks. At first I just noticed it by feeling it while shaving. I thought it was just a bump from running into something. Then it kind of got a little smaller, but then turned pink. IT does not hurt at all. When you touch it is a tad sensative, but does not bother me at all. I thought maybe it was a begnin cyst at first, because I had one below my knee a few years ago and it took months to go away, but since it turned a little pink I wonder if it is something else. I also just found out i am pregnant and worried that this might effect the baby

It could be a number of things, none of them particularly worrisome. Benign skin masses are the most likely cause, including a lipoma (a benign tumor of fat cells) or an epidermal inclusion cyst (a cyst filled with skin debris and lined by normal skin cells sometimes called a sebaceous cyst). The other possibility (although much less likely because it doesn't sound particularly painful) would be erythema nodosum which is an inflammatory skin condition sometimes associated with mediciations. If you notice any significant change in size, color or pain, those would be an indication to have it examined, but it is mostly likely nothing that would affect your pregnancy. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much. It does sometimes seem pinkish and other times you can't see it only feel it...but i am wondering if it becomes pink after shave it or touch it too much. Sometimes i think it looks a little bruised liked, but i have hit it too.

Well, I went and got an ultrasound and it wasn't what my doctor thought(she thought it was a fatty tumor). The doc who did the ultrasound said that nothing was coming up, she said it is almost like the prob was moving over any other part of my leg, but there is obviously a lump there, because she can feel it and see that is pink. She said that she would get the info to my reg doc and they may want to stick a needle in it and see if any fluid comes out. That is all I got from her. I hope this means everything is ok.

It still may be a lipoma (fatty tumor). The fact that it has the same appearance as the surrounding tissue on ultrasound actually supports it since lipomas are nearly identical to normal fat. The problem with doing a needle aspirate on a possible lipoma is that if it comes back with only fat, it leaves the possibilty that the nodule was missed. If that turns out to be the case, it may be worth your peace of mind to have it removed. Given the ultrasound appearance, I'm even less concerned about it.

I am kind of confused. If they do the needle thing and only fat is removed, why is it bad that the nodule was not? And why would only the fat be removed and not the nodule? Also I just found out i am pregnant. Do you think any of this will effect the baby?

Ok, so what you are saying, is that by doing the needle thing they may only get fatty tissue and not the nodule, so nothing was really found out, except i may have normal fatty tissue, but a not normal nodule. Hopefully i am getting this right. So, unless they had an ultrasound help guide the needle the whole poking me with a needle could be useless. Does this even seem like something to worry about to you either? I almost think my own doctor humored me with the ultrasound because I am pregnant and all worried.

Sorry, my fault in how i worded the last question. i have not had the biopsy with a needle that is what the doctor who did my ultrasound suggested my doctor might do. When i was asking if i understood correctly i used the words "nothing was really found out" like past tense. I should have said "Nothing really would be found out"(future tense) Am i making sense?   Sorry, i am so confusing.

How big is this lump? How deep is the lump (right on the surface, or deep)?

I would say the size of a quarter when you feel it. When you see it though it doesn't look as big as it feels if that makes sense at all. It seems right on the surface, doesn't feel deep. But it is sensative to the touch and when my reg doc touched it on monday, she really touched it and played around with it that Tuesday(just tuesday) the lump was tender SOMETIMES without being touched. Wanted to add that it doesn't move around, like i have read Limpomas do.

Since it is not deep - it is easy to tell if you are in the middle of the lump. Sticking a needle in the lump in this case would be much more useful - but I suspect the primary reason would be to see if this was cyst - if you drain flud from the lump, that would tell you that it was a cyst.

I would probably recommend that my patient have a surgeon remove the lump to be sure what it was, and solve the problem.
